How the Colors Work
- Green — the letter is correct and in the right spot. Keep it there.
- Yellow — the letter is in the word, but in a different spot. Move it.
- Gray — the letter is not in the word. Do not use it again.
The Best Starting Words
A good first guess covers the most common letters at once. Words with two or three vowels work best:
- audio — four vowels, five common letters.
- about — three vowels and very common consonants.
- arise — a classic competitive wordle opening.
- raise / stone / crane — popular high-frequency openers.
Strategy to Solve Faster
- Don't guess — gather data. The first two guesses should cover as many different letters as possible (aim for 10 unique letters in two guesses).
- Move yellow letters every time. A yellow letter that stays put wastes a turn.
- Watch for doubles. If a word has two of the same letter, the second one only shows up after the first is placed.
- Use common endings. Once you have a couple of letters, think about typical suffixes like -ER, -ED, -LY, -ES, -ING (though wordle words are only 5 letters, so -ER and -ED matter most).
- Narrow with a throwaway guess. With two tries left, use one guess that tests several untried letters at once.
